UK Grid Live is an independent website focused on real-time and historical electricity system data for Great Britain. If you need to contact the site operator about privacy or data use, please do so through the public channels linked on the site or via the associated X account @ukgridlive.

What personal data we collect

UK Grid Live does not currently provide account registration, user profiles, newsletter signups, or comment systems. In normal use, the site does not intentionally collect personal data such as your name, email address, or postal address.

Technical data

Like most websites, standard server or platform logs may record basic technical information such as IP address, browser type, request path, and timestamp for security, performance, and troubleshooting purposes. These logs are handled by the hosting or platform infrastructure and are not used to build visitor profiles.

Browser storage and local settings

Some parts of the site use local browser storage to improve the experience and reduce unnecessary API traffic. This may include:

• saving your selected region or filter on tools like the Octopus Agile tracker
• caching the last successful data snapshot to reduce load times and external API calls
• storing lightweight state such as selected wind farm, dismissed notices, or share configuration

This information is stored in your own browser on your device. It is not treated as a user account and is not shared back with UK Grid Live as a personal profile.

Third-party data sources

UK Grid Live relies on public and open data sources to display electricity, weather, and price information. These sources may include Elexon BMRS, the Carbon Intensity API, NESO datasets, Sheffield Solar PVLive, Open-Meteo, Octopus Energy public APIs, and mapping providers such as OpenStreetMap or Ordnance Survey.

When your browser loads data or map tiles from those services, they may receive standard request information such as your IP address and browser details as part of delivering that content.

Advertising and Google AdSense

UK Grid Live may display advertising provided by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies, local storage, or similar technologies to serve ads, measure ad performance, limit repeated display of the same ad, and where permitted, personalise advertising.

If AdSense is active on the site, Google may process information such as IP address, browser information, device information, and page interaction data to serve and measure ads. UK Grid Live does not receive your full Google account data from this process.

Consent messaging

For visitors in the UK, EEA, and Switzerland, UK Grid Live may display a consent message managed through Google's Privacy & Messaging platform or another consent management platform. This message is intended to let visitors make choices about advertising-related storage, measurement, and personal data use where required by law or platform policy.

Your choices in that message may affect whether ads are personalised, non-personalised, limited, or not shown in the usual way for eligible traffic.

Social sharing and X integration

The site includes social share features so visitors can share dashboard snapshots or links on platforms such as X, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, or Facebook. If you choose to use those share tools, the selected platform will receive the relevant link or text you are sharing.

UK Grid Live also operates automation to publish summary graphics to the @ukgridlive account. That automation uses API credentials controlled by the site operator. It is used for posting content generated from public grid data, not for collecting visitor information.

Cookies

UK Grid Live uses a limited amount of browser storage for site features and may also rely on cookies or similar technologies used by hosting providers, security infrastructure, embedded third-party services, and advertising partners such as Google AdSense. Depending on your location and the choices you make in the consent message, these technologies may be used for technical delivery, measurement, fraud prevention, consent storage, and advertising purposes.

Analytics

UK Grid Live aims to stay minimal and privacy-conscious. If separate analytics tools are introduced later, this page will be updated to explain what is collected, why it is collected, and how those tools interact with any consent mechanism already in place.

How long data is kept

Local browser storage remains on your device until it expires, is overwritten, or you clear it. Platform or infrastructure logs may be retained for operational and security reasons for a limited period according to the platform provider’s retention rules.

Your choices

• you can clear your browser storage at any time using your browser settings
• you can use the consent message, where shown, to review or change advertising and privacy choices
• you can avoid using social share features if you do not want data sent to those platforms
• you can browse the site without creating an account

Children’s privacy

UK Grid Live is a general information website and is not designed specifically for children. It does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
